چکیده

Optimized Link State Routing protocol (OLSR) is one promising routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks. It recently reached the RFC step and is still under improvement before becoming a standard. Since its first design, OLSR has been associated with the Multipoint Relay (MPR) protocol to reduce the flooding of OLSR topological messages. Many papers has been written on possible promising solutions to improve OLSR by replacing MPR by another topology control protocol, modifying MPR heuristic, or adapting OLSR to fast mobility and include security. But few papers have dealt with the interactions between MPR and OLSR and what makes them so particular. In this paper, we analyze OLSR requirements and MPR properties and show that OLSR optimality is bound to the deep cooperation and interaction between MPR and OLSR. We specifically exhibit the intrinsic properties of MPR absolutely necessary to OLSR, and that cannot be found in any other topology control protocol at this time. Conversely, we illustrate how OLSR is able to correct MPR’s drawbacks to reach its objective. We also show that OLSR suffers from convergence problems that are commonly dealt with adequate configuration parameters as suggested in the RFC3626. Finally, we suggest that any attempt to alter any of the two protocols, or their respective configuration parameters, will lead to suboptimal results.

An analysis of the Multi-Point Relays selection in OLSR

OLSR is a recent routing protocol for multi-hop wireless ad-hoc networks standardized by the IETF. It uses the concept of Multi-Point Relays (MPR) to minimize the overhead of routing messages and limit the harmful effects of broadcast in such networks. In this report, we are interested in the performance evaluation of Multi-Point Relays selection. We analyze the mean number of selected MPR in t...

RE-OLSR: Residual Energy-Based OLSR Protocol in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

OLSR is a well-known proactive routing protocol designed for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). OLSR adopts a concept of an MPR mechanism where only mobile nodes selected as MPR nodes can retransmit broadcast packets received from other mobile nodes. Although OLSR reduces the number of broadcast packets, MPR nodes consume more energy than other mobile nodes. Since mobile nodes in MANETs are power...

Performance Testing of OLSR using Mobility Predictions

OLSR (Optimized Link State Routing) protocol routing is a proactive routing protocol presented by the IETF MANET (Mobile Ad-hoc NETwork) working group for ad-hoc networks. The common drawback of all tabledriven protocols in MANETs is the large routing overhead for the creation of routing tables. In order to tackle this issue, OLSR uses the Multipoint Relaying protocol (MPR), which main use is t...

Amélioration la performance d’OLSR en utilisant la durée de lien The OLSR performance enhancement using Link Duration

One of the best mobility metrics is the Link Duration (LD) that presents how long two nodes are connected. OLSR is one of the most popular ad-hoc routing protocols. Multipoint Relays (MPR) is used by OLSR for controlled flooding. In this paper, we introduce a new approach to select a MPR in OLSR by using the simplest modification and no additional packet header. This approach introduces the ide...

NCA: New Cooperative Algorithm for Reducing Topology Control Packets in OLSR

OLSR (Optimized Link State Routing Protocol) is a routing protocol designed especially for MANETs (Mobile Ad hoc Networks) and is currently the most widely deployed for this type of networks. OLSR uses multipoint relay (MPR: MultiPoint Relay) flooding mechanism to optimize topology control messages broadcasting throughout the network. Each node of the network selects a subset of nodes (MPR) amo...
